Though Agatha runs, Ebb is stabbed, and the Mage is accidentally killed, the ultimate physical elixir for Simon and the world of mages is the defeat of the Insidious Humdrum. But even in those without happy endings, the conclusion of a journey is solidified with the hero gaining something.įor Simon, the beginning of the end occurs alongside Penny, Agatha, Baz, the Mage, Ebb the Goatherd, and the Insidious Humdrum. My question for this stage is, how does Simon Snow gain both a physical and mental reward at the end of his journey? In Rainbow Rowell's novel Carry On, the end of the main character (Simon Snow)'s journey is marked with the achievement of both types of elixirs. Whether this be a physical reward (a person, a treasure) or an abstract reward (knowledge, a "closing"), the elixir is what will right the hero's ordinary world forever. The princess gets her prince, the family is reunited, they all live happily ever after. According to American scholar Joseph Campbell, this final stage of the journey is called the return with the elixir. In most works of fiction, there is a happy ending.
